Synopsis: Spring Awakening, is a modern rock musical written by Steven Sater and is based on the German play of the same name by Frank Wedekind (1891). Set in late-19th-century Germany, the 90’s infused rock musical tells the story of teenagers discovering the inner and outer tumult of their burgeoning sexuality amidst the oppression of late Victorian values.
Design Concept: “Awful sweet to be a butterfly.” These lyrics taken directly from the musical score were the inspiration for the scenery. A sterile laboratory environment fits the story’s themes of antiquated oppression. Oversized specimen boxes with butterflies trapped between panes of glass are suspended above the stage, then lit from within to visually ‘come alive’ with neon colors during the angst-y rock numbers. Industrial-style storage boxes housing various props become the mobile “furniture” pieces for each scene while punctuating the importance of utilitarianism over enjoyment in life. The final
