Synopsis: The Drowsy Chaperone, is a modern day parody about American musical comedies of the 1920’s. The story follows a meek and antisocial middle-aged musical theatre fan seeking to cure his “non-specific sadness.” To cheer himself up, he plays the record from his favorite musical, the 1928 (fictional) hit The Drowsy Chaperone, and the show comes to life onstage.

Design Concept: With NYC as the story’s setting, the design juxtaposed the narrator’s drab turn of the century apartment filled with Broadway memorabilia against the ostentatious color-saturated world of 1920’s musicals. To support the fast paced action, a red velvet curtain divided areas of focus and acted as a theatrical backdrop for additional scenery during the play within a play. A Murphy bed hidden in the wall was re-dressed between scenes to fit different bedroom settings. The final
